Growing Talent Case Study #1: Greensboro, NC

Greensboro, North Carolina is home to 7 colleges and universities, totaling 50,000 college students. Retaining young talent has been a challenge, and data has shown that about 30% of college students stay in the city of Greensboro post-graduation.

Campus Greensboro, an initiative of Action Greensboro, created a Fellows Program to prepare college students to enter the workforce, helping them discover career options post-graduation, and motivating students to explore all that the city has to offer. Students benefit from networking with key industry leaders, tailored mentorship, professional development, world-class leadership training, and social events with a cohort of high-achieving peers.

After completing the Fellows Program, 89% of students indicated that they are interested in making Greensboro home. Greensboro leaders believe that high-touch programming and community engagement drives connection and retention that will increase young talent in their city.

Growing Talent Case Study #2: Detroit, MI

Although on the rise, Detroit still struggles to retain talent as more than a third of college graduates leave the state within one year of obtaining their degree. So far there hasn’t been a collaborative, region-wide initiative to retain and attract talent but Let’s Detroit changed all of that.

After a year of research, the Detroit Regional Chamber and almost 100 partners launched Let’s Detroit in September as ‘stage one’ of a website, texting function, social media strategy and programming all focused on helping people “find their place” across Southeast Michigan. The platform’s most unique aspect is the Text a Detroiter function where anyone in the world can text anyone in Detroit to get a local ambassador’s recommendations on places to live, things to do, professional networking or ways to make an impact. (Try it out – it’s pretty cool!)

Dedicated to improving equitable talent outcomes for the region, Let’s Detroit is an iterative project that will grow and change over time. For now the initiative is testing innovative solutions to address complex problems, and listening and changing all the way through.

Growing Talent Case Study #3: Pittsburgh, PA

Pittsburgh and the southwestern Pennsylvania region are home to over 60 institutions of higher education and graduates over 40,000 students each year. Retaining young talent is a challenge everywhere, and Pittsburgh has made it a high priority to keep more talent in the region by increasing awareness of employment and quality of life opportunities.

ImaginePittsburgh.com is an initiative of the Allegheny Conference and provides information about what it’s like to live, work, and play in the region. As part of an overall welcome to students, a newly formed college page provides resources to access internship opportunities and employment, learn about activities and events, plus get access to free stuff as well as unique networking and employer event opportunities. Employers in Pittsburgh are also working together to increase the number and quality of internships and placement. Pittsburgh leadership believes that early engagement with college talent and increased awareness about regional opportunity will retain more students and create a more vibrant, diverse workforce.
